CNN —An epic festival in Las Vegas featuring a lineup that included Alica Keys, Mary J. Blige, Janet Jackson and Gwen Stefani was canceled on the eve of its opening due to high winds. According to the “Lovers & Friends” festival’s official website, “organizers have been monitoring the weather for several days and proactively preparing for a windy Saturday. However, the National Weather Service has now issued a High Wind Warning, including dangerous 30-35 mph sustained winds with gusts potentially more than 60 mph.”“Following advice from the National Weather Service and in consultation with local public officials, we must make the safest decision for our fans, artists, and staff, and cancel tomorrow’s Lovers & Friends Festival,” the statement posted on Friday continued. “This was an incredibly heartbreaking decision to make as we are aware that fans have traveled from all over the world to enjoy this incredible lineup of superstars and have been looking forward to this event for several months,” the statement added. Science alone won’t stop the planet from overheating. But science coupled with political science just might. That’s the theme of a new book, “Long Problems: Climate Change and the Challenge of Governing Across Time.” It’s by Thomas Hale, an American political scientist who teaches at the University of Oxford’s Blavatnik School of Government. Hale argues that people are too quick to throw up their hands because the political will to stop climate change is lacking. He calls them, at one point, “political technologies,” a phrase I like.

Challenging Abortion, Again

How safe is it to take abortion pills? The case could curtail Americans’ access to mifepristone, the first pill taken in a two-drug regimen for a medication abortion. A decision in the plaintiff’s favor would change the landscape of abortion not state by state, like the effects of the 2022 ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade, but across the country. Post-Roe AmericaThe abortion opponents who sued the government in tomorrow’s case, F.D.A. v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, are frustrated by how common abortion has remained.

While donations to charity have been rising, the pool of donors is shrinking, as philanthropy becomes hyper-concentrated among a small group of ultra-wealthy mega-donors, according to a new study. While women make up11% of the ultra-high-net-worth population, they account for 22% of the larger givers, according to the study. Today’s ultra-wealthy donors also prefer to give through private foundations and donor-advised funds — which give them more control — rather than simply writing checks to the Red Cross or United Way. The top charitable cause for ultra-wealthy donors was education (at 54%), according to Altrata. "There is some evidence that the ultra-high-net-worth population has different skews from the broader population," Pasic said.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Pebble Beach became a signature event for the elite on the PGA Tour and delivered what was expected. Scottie Scheffler and a host of big names are contending going into the weekend and the amateurs are headed home. Rory McIlroy is having a rough time and shot 74 at Pebble Beach, leaving him at 145 and 12 shots behind. Now the amateurs — already reduced in number from 156 to 80 because Pebble Beach is now a signature event — leave the course and turn it over to the PGA Tour players. The leading nine players going into the weekend all played Friday at Pebble Beach, an advantage when the wind was down and the conditions were soft.

Nikki Haley Mounts a Last Stand in New Hampshire

Nikki Haley finally got what she has desired since the very beginning of her campaign for the Republican presidential nomination: a one-on-one showdown with Donald Trump. Ron DeSantis of Florida ended his bid, leaving Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, as the only real threat to a third consecutive Trump nomination. Polls show Trump with a strong lead, but Haley rejected the notion that the race was over, saying “America doesn’t do coronations. A Suffolk University poll from today suggested that Trump would receive a slight increase in support in New Hampshire after the departure of DeSantis, who endorsed the former president. Trump also garnered the endorsement of two South Carolina politicians: Senator Tim Scott, a former Haley ally, as well as Representative Nancy Mace, whom Haley endorsed for Congress and whom Trump attempted to unseat in 2022.

3 Ways Tomorrow’s AI Will Differ From Today’s Chatbots

What is AGI and when will it become the new norm? OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Mira Murati discuss the capabilities of their future GPT models, how human relationships with AI will change in the future and how to address fears about safety, liability and work as the technology advances. After interviewing the makers of ChatGPT earlier this week, I’m left pondering: How exactly would I explain my job to an ancient hunter-gatherer? I’m thinking: “I put words and pictures into a machine that makes a clickety-clack sound and then those words and pictures can be seen by others with clickety-clack machines.”

NEW YORK, Oct 17 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Having given up a side-gig in DJ-ing, Goldman Sachs (GS.N) boss David Solomon has one less distraction. Goldman reported a one-third year-on-year drop in earnings on Tuesday, in a quarter riddled with one-off charges. Those included a hit related to buy-now-pay-later lender GreenSky, which Goldman bought only two years ago, and is selling. Absent all that, Goldman would have made a return on equity of just over 10%. Goldman made a 7.1% return on equity in the quarter, on an annualized basis, which would have been 10.2% without one-off charges.

Russia’s Vladimir Putin, whose on-going assault on Ukraine is another major point of global instability and division, is expected to attend. The last time he was in Beijing was for the Winter Olympics opening ceremony in early 2022. Winning backing for China’s global leadership from a broad swath of developing and emerging economies is key to Xi’s strategy to push back against perceived international threats, analysts say. Overseas development finance from China’s two major development banks has also decreased significantly since a peak in 2016, the report’s data show. Ten years on, Chinese decision makers are becoming “more selective and more calculating” about the benefits of their financing, she said.

If, as expected, Feijoo fails, acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who leads the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE), will have two months from Wednesday to make his bid before parliament is dissolved and fresh elections are called. Sept 13 (Reuters) - United Auto Workers (UAW) President Shawn Fain said on Wednesday the union is still seeking significant pay hikes as talks continue with the Detroit Three automakers, a day before four-year labor deals are set to expire. Reuters reported late on Tuesday that the union may opt to strike at targeted auto plants if they fail to reach new contracts covering 146,000 U.S. auto workers. The UAW initially sought a 20% wage hike upon ratification and four annual 5% hikes, but had offered trim those hikes to around 36% in total, three sources told Reuters. Fain said the union was still seeking 40% hikes in total. Coordinated strikes would mark the first-ever simultaneous labor stoppage at all three Detroit automakers and one of the largest U.S. industrial labor actions in recent years.

DETROIT (AP) — aWith just over 24 hours left before a strike deadline, United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain says offers from the companies aren't enough and the union is getting ready to strike. We are preparing to strike these companies in a way they've never seen before.”The union is threatening to strike after contracts with companies that haven't reached an agreement by 11:59 p.m. on Thursday. On Wednesday, Fain said the companies upped their wage offers, but he still called them inadequate. In a 2019 agreement the union got 6% pay raises over four years with lump sums in some years as well as profit sharing checks. All three companies’ offers on cost-of-living adjustments were deficient, he said, providing little or no protection against inflation, or annual lump sums that may workers won’t get.

Peak oil is another reason to shun OPEC club

The group known as OPEC+, which includes the organization’s 13 oil-producing members as well as allied nations like Russia, produces over 40% of the world’s oil. Guyana’s recoverable reserves of around 11 billion barrels in that field alone make it an obvious candidate to join OPEC. Non-OPEC oil nations, such as the United States, Brazil and Canada, are growing production. Even OPEC+ members aren’t united in their desire to prioritize price over production. OPEC+, which comprises the cartel’s 13 oil-producing states and ten other allied nations such as Russia, represents over 40% of the world’s oil production.

The bill to suspend the so-called debt ceiling, approved by the House of Representatives on Wednesday, solves the most immediate threat to the government’s creditors. The Federal Reserve’s fight against inflation also stands to knock Treasury prices, while pushing up yields. Spending caps and other measures in the debt ceiling deal are projected to save $1.5 trillion over the next decade, the Congressional Budget Office said Tuesday. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned on May 26 that the federal government would be unable to pay its bills on June 5. The U.S. House of Representatives voted 314-117 on May 31 to suspend the debt ceiling, a legislative cap on how much the Treasury can borrow that had been set at $31.4 trillion.
